Isaac or even Yitzhak (יִצְחָק "He will laugh", Standard Hebrew Yiẓḥaq, Tiberian Hebrew Yiṣḥāq; Arabic اسحاق ʾIsḥāq) occurs as Biblical patriarch, the boy & heir of Abraham and the father of Jacob and Esau. His story is told in the Book of Genesis. Isaac was therefore known as because whilst his mother, Sarah, overheard that she would bear a little one inside her geezerhood, she laughed (Genesis 18:10-15, 21:6-7).
Occasionally commentators think that in the Book of Amos there is some guide that Israel may be another title for Isaac (Amos 7:9, Xvi) however these are far extra commons to choose Israel to mean simply Isaac's boy Jacob (Genesis 32:22-28, especially 28).
Isaac was a sole boy of Abraham by Sarah. He was a hanker lived of the trio patriarchs (Genesis 21:1-3). Isaac was circumcised by his father when eight years old (Genesis Four-7); & a great feast was held inside connection by owning his existence weaned.
the next memorable event within his life is that attached using a story of God touching Abraham by request him to offer Isaac as a sacrifice in a mountain in the land of Moriah (Genesis 22). A story as well appears in the Qur'an except Islam asserts that Ishmael was the one to be sacrificed, not Isaac (see Similarities between the Bible and the Qur'an). For several readers, each religious believers & non, a Near sacrifice of Isaac is one of the virtually all worrying & provocative stories in the Bible.
While he was xl years aged Rebekah was chosen for his wife (Genesis 2 dozen). Fallowing a dying & burial of his father, he took higher his home at Beer-lahai-roi (Genesis 25:7-11), where his twin sons, Esau and Jacob, were born (Genesis 21-26), a previous of whom seems to keep close at hand been his favored boy (Genesis 27, Twenty-eight).
Due to the famine (Genesis 26:1) Isaac attend Gerar. Sequentially to keep away from existence flushed, he lie around his relationship to Rebekah. This story recalls a twice-told story just about Abraham's visit within Egypt (12:12-20) and within Gerar (20:2). A Philistine king rebuked Isaac for his dishonesty.
Fallowing staying for occasionally instance in the land of the Philistines, he returned to Beersheba, where God gave him fresh assurance of the covenant blessing, and in which Abimelech entered into a covenant of peace sustaining him.
A next primary event within his life was a blessing of his sons (Genesis 27:1). He died at Mamre, "being old and full of days" (Genesis 35:27-29), 180 years old, & was inhumed in the Cave of Machpelah.
In the New Testament, reference is mass produced to his with been "offered up" by his father (Heb. 11:17; James 2:21), & to his blessing his sons (Heb. 11:20). When a tike of promise, he is contrasted using Ishmael (Rom. 9:7, X; Gal. 4:28; Heb. 11:18).
Isaac is "at once a counterpart of his father in simple devoutness and purity of life, and a contrast in his passive weakness of character, which in part, at least, may have sprung from his relations to his mother and wife. After the expulsion of Ishmael and Hagar, Isaac had no competitor, and grew up in the shade of Sarah's tent, moulded into feminine softness by habitual submission to her strong, loving will." His life was thus quietly & uneventful that it was spent "within the circle of a few miles; so guileless that he let Jacob overreach him rather than disbelieve his assurance; so tender that his mother's death was the poignant sorrow of years; so patient and gentle that peace with his neighbours was dearer than even such a coveted possession as a well of living water dug by his own men; so grandly obedient that he put his life at his father's disposal; so firm in his reliance on God that his greatest concern through life was to honour the divine promise given to his race", Geikie's Hours, etc.
